{"id":44,"date":"2015-03-27T20:09:01","date_gmt":"2015-03-27T20:09:01","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blog.soton.ac.uk\/cres\/?page_id=44"},"modified":"2015-06-09T15:52:31","modified_gmt":"2015-06-09T15:52:31","slug":"research-design","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/generic.wordpress.soton.ac.uk\/cres\/research-design\/","title":{"rendered":"Research Design"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The research will use mixed methods; quantitative and qualitative, a multi strategy so that the findings can be cross checked for credibility and validity of data, (Bryman, 2008; Dornyei, 2007; Irwin, 2006:4).<\/p>\n<p>The research will involve two phases:<\/p>\n<p><strong>Phase I<br \/>\n<\/strong>The first phase will be looking into the current theory on Critical Thinking skills and Engineering education based on established literature and design a functional checklist \u2013 categories of Critical Thinking skills for ESAP Engineering.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Phase II <\/strong>(data collection)<br \/>\nMeasured observations, (i) to investigate students perceptions and understanding of Critical thinking skills at the beginning of Semester 2, comparing the experience of students from different L1 and cultural backgrounds, and following their development through the year progressing to undergraduate engineering degree programme, (ii) to investigate how the current curriculum addresses the expectations and learning needs of the students, and (iii) to find out how well-prepared foundation year students are, in term of their critical skills, for their destination undergraduate engineering degree programmes.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Data will be collected through:<br \/>\n<\/strong>(i) Document analysis (e.g. Foundation Year Engineering Programme Profile)<\/p>\n<p>(ii) On-line self-completion questionnaires (pre-coded and single short text responses)<\/p>\n<p>(iii) Semi-structured interviews (module instructors)<\/p>\n<p>(iv) Semi-structured interviews and Focus group (students)<\/p>\n<p>(v) Class room observation\/audio-recording<\/p>\n<p>(vi) Zappers<\/p>\n<p><strong>What research procedures will be used?<br \/>\n<\/strong><br \/>\n(i) On-line self-completion questionnaires (pre-coded and single short text responses) for\u00a0student participants<br \/>\nDuration: 10 minutes X 3 times<\/p>\n<p>(ii) Semi-structured interviews<br \/>\nLanguage Pathways\u00a0Module Instructors<br \/>\nDuration: 30 minutes<br \/>\nFoundation Year Engineering\u00a0Module Instructors<br \/>\nDuration: 30 minutes<\/p>\n<p>(iii) Semi-structured interviews and Focus Group Discussions (students)<br \/>\nDuration: 30 minutes x 3<\/p>\n<p>(iv) Class room observations<br \/>\nDuration: whole of Semester 2<\/p>\n<p>(v) Zappers<br \/>\nDuration: end of Semester 2 (10 minutes)<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The research will use mixed methods; quantitative and qualitative, a multi strategy so that the findings can be cross checked for credibility and validity of data, (Bryman, 2008; Dornyei, 2007; Irwin, 2006:4).
