Exhibition: Explore Saints and Saviours<\/em> by Mary Evans at John Hansard Gallery and Marlands Shopping Centre<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

In celebration of Black History Month, Saints and Saviours<\/em><\/strong><\/a> is a new installation by Mary Evans (b. 1963, Lagos, Nigeria) that pays homage to the rich migratory history of the city of Southampton and its people, a history that continues to expand today.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Presented in partnership withBlack History Month South<\/strong>,<\/a>Saints and Saviours <\/em>can be found at John Hansard Gallery<\/a><\/strong>, our flagship city centre venue, and Marlands Shopping Centre<\/a><\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Turner Sims<\/a><\/strong>, our wonderful on-campus concert hall, has a feast of upcoming concerts for you to enjoy. We’ve chosen a couple of highlights!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Manu Delago, Environ Me<\/em><\/strong>
8pm, Friday 5 November<\/p>\n\n\n\n

After several years as an international touring musician with Bj\u00f6rk, Olafur Arnalds, Cinematic Orchestra and Anoushka Shankar, Manu Delago – Grammy-nominated artist, world-renowned handpan player and composer – transforms into a one-man-orchestra to present his first audio-visual solo-programme Environ Me<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ashley Henry<\/strong>
8pm, Saturday 13 November <\/p>\n\n\n\n

In a much-anticipated night of superb jazz, South London pianist Ashley Henry takes to the stage with his trio. One of a new generation of musicians that have been raised with a wide range of influences, Ashley is clearly influenced by hip-hop but has his roots firmly in jazz. Having recently toured with both Loyle Carner and Christine & The Queens, Henry has a rapidly growing international profile.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Concerts: Free lunchtime concerts from the Department of Music<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The University’s Department of Music<\/a><\/strong> are delighted to be staging free lunchtime concerts at Turner Sims again this Autumn.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

UoSMusic Presents\u2026 Birth of the Cool<\/strong>
1pm on Monday 1 November

Music from the seminal Miles Davis album Birth of The Cool. Using the original arrangements and nine-piece line-up, the group will explore this hugely influential repertoire adding their own contemporary voices to the mix. Directed by Dan Mar-Molinero.

UoSMusic Presents\u2026 Real Telepaths<\/strong>
1pm on Monday 15 November

This concert is performed by the Hartley Loop Orchestra (University of Southampton music students) alongside composer Neil Luck<\/a><\/strong> and London based new music groupEnsemble Plus Minus<\/a><\/strong>. Each performance version of Real Telepaths is devised during the rehearsal process, with performers bringing music they already play, which is then sculpted and warped into the composition.

Talks and workshops: Caption Conscious Ecology series from Voices in the Gallery<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Voices in the Gallery<\/a><\/strong> is a research project on voice and access in art, led by Dr Sarah Hayden<\/a><\/strong> of the English Department<\/a><\/strong> at University of Southampton, and funded by an AHRC Innovation Fellowship.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Caption Conscious Ecology is a series of talks and workshops, organised by Voices in the Galleryand Nottingham Contemporary<\/a><\/strong>, advocating for the role of captioning in the production and display of moving-image work. Bringing scholars from D\/deaf Studies and Critical Disability Studies together with artists and access workers, this series prompts conversations on the history, function, practical provision, and creative potentiality of captioning. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Talk: Protest and Practice<\/strong>

An online talk and screening exploring captioning as protest and in practice, with historian and disability scholar-activist Jaipreet Virdi and creative captioners Collective Text.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Exhibition: Final weeks of Hetain Patel’s Trinity<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Until Saturday 30 October<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

You have until the end of October to see Trinity<\/a> <\/strong><\/em>at John Hansard Gallery<\/a><\/strong>, <\/em>the biggest solo exhibition to date by the highly acclaimed artist Hetain Patel. Trinity<\/em> is also the name for an ambitious new film by Patel, the final part of a trilogy, being premiered as part of the exhibition. Working with dance, martial arts and sign language collaborators, Trinity<\/em> represents Patel’s most significant film so far.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ever wanted to learn how to breakdance? Inspired by Hetain Patel’s Trinity<\/em>, come and join international gold medallist and Britain’s Got Talent <\/em>finalist, Poppin\u2019 Ron<\/a><\/strong> in this special workshop. You will learn the basics of telling a story through dance choreography, body isolation, expressing yourself, and having fun!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Festival: Get involved with Southampton Arts and Humanities Festival<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Thursday 11 to Saturday 20 November<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Formerly known as Human Worlds Festival, Southampton Arts and Humanities Festival <\/a><\/strong>showcases research from across the University.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The festival programme will include free online events, downloadable activities and resources – all accessible internationally, and a number of in-person events.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Depending on Government and University at the time, the aim is to conclude the festival with the free, family friendly celebratory event, Hands-on Humanities Day<\/strong><\/a>, on Saturday 20 November.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n
