Whether you have exams, deadlines or are just feeling a bit cold and deflated, Hannah Teague, University of Southampton Arts Ambassador, has selected a handful of arts and cultural events to brighten up your January.\u00a0<\/p>\n

With the dark nights, cold temperatures and exam season for University students, it can be hard to muster the strength to leave the warmth of your house and try something new. Whether it be to just give yourself some breathing space, or to tell winter that it can\u2019t bring you down, Southampton and Winchester has an incredible array of things to do, and for cheaper than you might think\u2026<\/p>\n

“Shifts” by University of Southampton music department<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

If you\u2019re a music lover, Sunday 27 January sees the music department at University of Southampton perform their concert \u201cShifts\u201d at Turner Sims concert hall. Using minimalism as a theme, music students perform compositions by Steve Reich and works from composers based here in Southampton alongside professional guest players. Tickets are \u00a310 and better still completely FREE<\/strong> for students (you must have a student ID). Please visit Turner Sims\u2019 <\/a>website to find out more and book a ticket.<\/p>\n

Siobh\u00e1n Hapaskas “Snake and Apple” at John Hansard Gallery<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

The University\u2019s John Hansard Gallery<\/a>\u00a0(located in the city centre) is still showing its exhibition \u201cSpace, Light and Time: Edward Woodman, a retrospective\u201d. <\/em>Edward Woodman was a prolific photographer who took portraits of artists and documented some of the most influential works of the late 20th<\/sup> century. The gallery is also showing work from other artists, including stunning sculptures by S\u0131obh\u00e1n Hapaska and Anya Gallaccio\u2019s \u201cAll the rest is silence\u2026\u201d, indigo dye slowly permeates a large piece of silk which gradually evolves as time passes. The exhibition is open Tues \u2013 Sat, 11am \u2013 5pm until Saturday 2 February and admission is FREE<\/strong>.\u00a0Find out more about the exhibitions here<\/a>.<\/p>\n

For those in theatre, the Southampton University Players (SUP)<\/a> will be performing Agatha Christie\u2019s \u201cAnd Then There Were None\u201d at Nuffield Southampton Theatres\u00a0 (NST) from 23 \u2013 26 January. Tickets range from \u00a310 – \u00a317, and NST Campus.<\/p>\n

In Winchester, the gallery at Winchester Discovery Centre <\/a>is currently hosting an exhibition of Dame Elizabeth Blackadder which shows a variety of her paintings. She was the first woman to be elected both to the Royal Scottish Academy and the Royal Academy and she was given the prestigious title of Her Majesty\u2019s Painter and Limner in Scotland in 2001. The exhibition draws on the artist\u2019s studio to tell a story about a remarkable woman. the exhibition is on 18 January 2019, 9:00 – 20 March 2019, 15:00<\/p>\n

I hope you\u2019ve been inspired to get and try something new this January and more importantly to give yourself a well-earned break from your work. Southampton and Winchester offer some incredible opportunities to do just that.<\/p>\n
