It gave me an opportunity to\u00a0rehearse my current thinking on where I&#8217;m going with this PhD.<\/p>\n<p>My reading, thinking and discussion since I started at Southampton has clarified some of my thinking, reinforced some, and opened up new avenues too.<\/p>\n<p>The clarification first: when I started this, I talked a lot about narrative and storytelling, but what turns interpretive facts into a story? I&#8217;m pretty sure its something to do with emotional\u00a0engagement.\u00a0The problem is, how do I define, or measure emotional engagement? In the National Trust&#8217;s visitor survey, they do ask visitors to measure the emotional impact of their visits. And it seems that the places where visitors score a higher emotional impact are also the places where that are more enjoyable, more satisfying, and where visitors are more likely to recommend a visit to friends. But what are visitors thinking of when they answer that question, what do they mean by, or think the National Trust means by, the words &#8216;emotional impact&#8217;? What can we tell those places where visitors don&#8217;t score a very high emotional impact?\u00a0Are they just places that just don&#8217;t interest today&#8217;s visitor, or can we identify storytelling techniques that will better engage the visitor?<\/p>\n<p>I haven&#8217;t discovered many answers yet in the literature relating to cultural heritage. Two of the <a title=\"Inspiring Learning for All\" href=\"http:\/\/www.inspiringlearningforall.gov.uk\/toolstemplates\/genericlearning\/\">Generic Learning Outcomes<\/a> commissioned by re:source (now renamed and twice merged to become a function of the Arts Council) back in 2002 refer to emotional engagement: the <em>Attitude and Values<\/em> outcome includes &#8220;feelings&#8221; and &#8220;empathy&#8221;; and the <em>Enjoyment Inspiration Creativity<\/em> outcome includes &#8220;having fun&#8221;, &#8220;being surprised&#8221; and &#8220;being inspired&#8221;. But the suggested ways of measuring these emotional outcomes are just as vague as the National Trust&#8217;s &#8216;emotional impact&#8217; question.<\/p>\n<p>Nevertheless, my work so far clarifies that emotional engagement is the theme, the golden thread running through all three avenues of research that I&#8217;ve started to explore.<\/p>\n<p>The first goes back to a comment a colleague made when I explained I was starting this research. He said &#8220;the problem is, companies want to sell us technology, the mark-up&#8217;s good and it isn&#8217;t very hard work. But we want to buy good content, and that&#8217;s harder work to make, and the profit margins are small.&#8221; So, what is it that differentiates companies that present as <em>technologists<\/em> from ones that appear \u00a0as <em>storymakers<\/em>? Is my colleague&#8217;s assessment of the economics correct? How should companies and cultural heritage organisations work together to ensure a healthy, sustainable interpretation industry? I proposed to my supervisors that I should address this aspect of my research by surveying a number of companies, and maybe\u00a0identifying\u00a0a number with which to complete a more in-depth structured interview.<\/p>\n<p>The second thread is the one I started with, the idea of structuring a compelling and engaging story over a three\u00a0dimensional\u00a0space. I&#8217;m hoping that the concepts of Adaptive Narrative and the Narrative Braid are going to help me do that, mixed with a little Space Syntax of course.<\/p>\n<p>And the third thread is the new one &#8211; exploring the importance of music as a storytelling device. I&#8217;ve still got to find my way around that one but my supervisors gave me some useful contacts to get in touch with to continue my music 101. We also discussed the idea of using a visitor&#8217;s own music collection to provide the soundtrack to the visit &#8211; comparing the title&#8217;s available on a visitor&#8217;s device with a database that tags each track with different emotional cues, then selecting the most appropriate music to accompany the different stages of the visit, a sort of Heritage Hijack of your music collection, if you will. Sometimes the shuffle function of my iPod have given me memorable moments, playing <em>Waterloo Sunset<\/em> for example when I was crossing the Thames one evening for example, or having climbed to the top of the lighthouse on Lundy Island, letting <em>I am a Rock<\/em> kick in. In my free time, I volunteered as a costumed interpreter at Kentwell Hall and, with re-enactment societies, at various medieval sites around the UK and France. When, one evening, a few of us said \u201cwe could make a business out of this\u201d I left my job at the bank to go to college, first to get an Art Foundation and then to Manchester Polytechnic to join an innovative course called Design for Communications Media. I specialised in Educational Media Design, with the intention of applying what I was learning to cultural heritage. During my vacations and upon graduation I worked for the nascent company my friends had started, Past Pleasures, creating immersive living history festivals at Lancaster and Tunbridge Wells, as well as projects including: an exhibition for the centenary of the Commonwealth Institute; a design for a metafictional Sherlock Holmes exhibition in Croydon; and, a game that combined real-time investment advice from 300 year-old characters at the Bank of England Museum with a digital simulation, tracking the players\u2019 investment portfolio from the founding of the bank to its tercentenary. In 1996 I helped found JMD&amp;Co, and for two years I also lectured on Heritage Tourism and Visitor Management and Interpretation modules for a Portsmouth University validated HND\\\/degree course at Farnborough Technical College. Subsequently, I enrolled in the new Distance Learning delivered Masters\u2019 degree in Museum Studies at Leicester University, where I became interested in the social use of space, particularly Bill Hillier\u2019s \u201cspace syntax,\u201d and the increasing futility of cultural heritage sites trying to tell doggedly linear stories in three-dimensional spaces. Although my dissertation explored models for mapping interpretation, and particularly learning styles, onto spaces, a satisfactory reconciliation of linear story and three-dimensional space eluded me. After graduation, I decided my time in the \u201csmall business\u201d end of cultural heritage was over for a while, and I left JMD&amp;Co to join a cultural institution, the National Trust, as a Regional Community, Learning and Volunteering Manager. I brought the first National Trust iPad into use at Batemans, where, combined with a wax cylinder record player, and the help of renowned folk singer, Jon Boden, we\u2019ve returned Rudyard Kipling\u2019s voice back into his old home. However, one of the innovations which I am most proud of is the National Trust\u2019s virtual tours. Working with a small company, and a range of disabled stakeholders, we created a touch-screen based human computer interface that could also, if required, be controlled with other input devices, and allowed visitors with a variety of disabilities to fully enjoy the virtual tour. When, one evening, a few of us said \u201cwe could make a business out of this\u201d I left my job at the bank to go to college, first to get an Art Foundation and then to Manchester Polytechnic to join an innovative course called Design for Communications Media. I specialised in Educational Media Design, with the intention of applying what I was learning to cultural heritage. During my vacations and upon graduation I worked for the nascent company my friends had started, Past Pleasures, creating immersive living history festivals at Lancaster and Tunbridge Wells, as well as projects including: an exhibition for the centenary of the Commonwealth Institute; a design for a metafictional Sherlock Holmes exhibition in Croydon; and, a game that combined real-time investment advice from 300 year-old characters at the Bank of England Museum with a digital simulation, tracking the players\u2019 investment portfolio from the founding of the bank to its tercentenary. In 1996 I helped found JMD&amp;Co, and for two years I also lectured on Heritage Tourism and Visitor Management and Interpretation modules for a Portsmouth University validated HND\/degree course at Farnborough Technical College. Subsequently, I enrolled in the new Distance Learning delivered Masters\u2019 degree in Museum Studies at Leicester University, where I became interested in the social use of space, particularly Bill Hillier\u2019s \u201cspace syntax,\u201d and the increasing futility of cultural heritage sites trying to tell doggedly linear stories in three-dimensional spaces. Although my dissertation explored models for mapping interpretation, and particularly learning styles, onto spaces, a satisfactory reconciliation of linear story and three-dimensional space eluded me. After graduation, I decided my time in the \u201csmall business\u201d end of cultural heritage was over for a while, and I left JMD&amp;Co to join a cultural institution, the National Trust, as a Regional Community, Learning and Volunteering Manager. I brought the first National Trust iPad into use at Batemans, where, combined with a wax cylinder record player, and the help of renowned folk singer, Jon Boden, we\u2019ve returned Rudyard Kipling\u2019s voice back into his old home. However, one of the innovations which I am most proud of is the National Trust\u2019s virtual tours. Working with a small company, and a range of disabled stakeholders, we created a touch-screen based human computer interface that could also, if required, be controlled with other input devices, and allowed visitors with a variety of disabilities to fully enjoy the virtual tour.
