During the 3 week internship, topics to be covered by Dr Ellie Williams &amp; Sarah Stark (with occasional help from others including Alistair Pike and Sonia Zakrzewski amongst others) will include ageing and sexing of human remains \u2013 and all the problems and issues that arise in trying to do this. The focus for today (day 2) is on trauma \u2013 fractures and dislocations \u2013 and what happens to the body when people break their bones. How does the body react after a bone is broken? How do we identify the action (or direction of stress) that caused the break? How much healing has gone on? How long did the person live afterwards? How can we tell if they used the broken bone?<\/p>\n<p>But the start of the internship concentrated on learning the basics of skeletal anatomy and osteoarchaeology \u2013 including laying out a skeleton and compiling an inventory. So the osteology laboratory has had skeletons laid out on the benches\u2026<br \/>\nIn the coming days, palaeopathology, including diseases such as syphilis, leprosy and TB, will be introduced. And the interns will also be making 3D scans (using structured light scanning and 3D prints of some of the bones!
