Part timers like me are required to only present every other year, so this time I was an audience member only, and Chair for one session. I hadn&#8217;t managed to go to the first day, because I was at work. Here are some selected personal highlights of the day.<\/p>\n<p>Eleonora Gandolfini kicked the day off introducing her work on MOOCs, local communities and cultural heritage. She&#8217;s looking at how the global might\u00a0become local to engage communities in the archaeology of what is close to them &#8211; for a start, she&#8217;s been creating text translations of our <a title=\"FutureLearn\" href=\"https:\/\/www.futurelearn.com\/courses\/portus\">Portus MOOC<\/a> into Italian. Here presentation included a couple of pleasant surprises for me: the first mention I&#8217;d heard that Portus has a past life as a safari park (which I&#8217;m sure wasn&#8217;t news to most of my peers), and a reference to, and display of,\u00a0<a title=\"The Portus MOOC and modelling\" href=\"http:\/\/memetechnology.org\/2014\/06\/14\/the-portus-mooc-and-modelling\/\">my virtual Lego model<\/a> of Building 5!<\/p>\n<p><a title=\"Basing House Project\" href=\"http:\/\/basinghouseproject.org\/category\/student-research-post\/dan-joyce\/\">Dan Joyce<\/a> followed with a review\u00a0at all the low-cost technology that can be used in archaeology, then <a title=\"Sotositen web\" href=\"http:\/\/moocs.southampton.ac.uk\/shipwrecks\/2014\/07\/21\/facilitator-biography-danielle-newman\/\">Danielle Newman<\/a> looked at using ethnographic techniques to interview archaeologists on public engagement. Her mention of the difficulties of how different professional communities using terminology differently struck a chord with me, <em>interpretation<\/em>, for example, is word that I and my archaeologist peers use very differently I think.<\/p>\n<p>For example, Trevor Rowe talked about how Augmented Reality, which most people only think of as an not-quite-there-yet technology for interpreting the past to visitors, might be used to help archaeological interpretation of data while on site. Later in the day, when <a title=\"Soton profile page\" href=\"http:\/\/www.southampton.ac.uk\/smmi\/about\/staff\/ecr105.page\">Elizabeth Richley<\/a> was talking about her work combining different data sources in 3D, I wondered when her work would be combined with Trevor&#8217;s to create &#8220;Archaeologist Goggles.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>In the following session, the presentation that stood out for me and, it seemed, excited the room was Leah Holguin&#8217;s\u00a0talk on <em>Disappearing Landscapes of the Gobi Desert. <\/em>It seemed a lot of people wanted to share her adventures, and I must admit, with all that sand and isolation, it felt like &#8220;real&#8221; Indiana Jones style, archaeology.<\/p>\n<p>I chaired a session on walls, with <a title=\"Academia.edu\" href=\"http:\/\/soton.academia.edu\/NickDugdale\/CurriculumVitae\">Nicholas Dugdale<\/a> skyping in to present his analysis of Roman marble shipping, <a title=\"academia.edu\" href=\"http:\/\/soton.academia.edu\/KatherineCrawford\">Katherine Crawford<\/a> and <a title=\"academia.edu\" href=\"http:\/\/soton.academia.edu\/IsobelPinder\">Isobel Pinder<\/a> with two different takes on Roman religious processionals, and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.southampton.ac.uk\/archaeology\/postgraduate\/our_students\/james_miles.page\">James Miles<\/a> updating us on his structural analysis of Winchester Cathedral.<\/p>\n<p>The final session ended with a really tough question for Peter Brugger who is researching the use of 3D printed versions of artefacts in museums. He was challenged with a question that amounted to &#8220;what&#8217;s the point?&#8221; After all, it doesn&#8217;t weight the same, or even feel the same, its by no means a replica &#8211; what is the learning outcome of a visitor interacting with it? But something he had said in his presentation made me think he already had the answer, that fiddling with the plastic version drew visitors&#8217; attention to the real thing. In my free time, I volunteered as a costumed interpreter at Kentwell Hall and, with re-enactment societies, at various medieval sites around the UK and France. When, one evening, a few of us said \u201cwe could make a business out of this\u201d I left my job at the bank to go to college, first to get an Art Foundation and then to Manchester Polytechnic to join an innovative course called Design for Communications Media. I specialised in Educational Media Design, with the intention of applying what I was learning to cultural heritage. During my vacations and upon graduation I worked for the nascent company my friends had started, Past Pleasures, creating immersive living history festivals at Lancaster and Tunbridge Wells, as well as projects including: an exhibition for the centenary of the Commonwealth Institute; a design for a metafictional Sherlock Holmes exhibition in Croydon; and, a game that combined real-time investment advice from 300 year-old characters at the Bank of England Museum with a digital simulation, tracking the players\u2019 investment portfolio from the founding of the bank to its tercentenary. In 1996 I helped found JMD&amp;Co, and for two years I also lectured on Heritage Tourism and Visitor Management and Interpretation modules for a Portsmouth University validated HND\\\/degree course at Farnborough Technical College. Subsequently, I enrolled in the new Distance Learning delivered Masters\u2019 degree in Museum Studies at Leicester University, where I became interested in the social use of space, particularly Bill Hillier\u2019s \u201cspace syntax,\u201d and the increasing futility of cultural heritage sites trying to tell doggedly linear stories in three-dimensional spaces. Although my dissertation explored models for mapping interpretation, and particularly learning styles, onto spaces, a satisfactory reconciliation of linear story and three-dimensional space eluded me. After graduation, I decided my time in the \u201csmall business\u201d end of cultural heritage was over for a while, and I left JMD&amp;Co to join a cultural institution, the National Trust, as a Regional Community, Learning and Volunteering Manager. I brought the first National Trust iPad into use at Batemans, where, combined with a wax cylinder record player, and the help of renowned folk singer, Jon Boden, we\u2019ve returned Rudyard Kipling\u2019s voice back into his old home. However, one of the innovations which I am most proud of is the National Trust\u2019s virtual tours. Working with a small company, and a range of disabled stakeholders, we created a touch-screen based human computer interface that could also, if required, be controlled with other input devices, and allowed visitors with a variety of disabilities to fully enjoy the virtual tour. In my free time, I volunteered as a costumed interpreter at Kentwell Hall and, with re-enactment societies, at various medieval sites around the UK and France. When, one evening, a few of us said \u201cwe could make a business out of this\u201d I left my job at the bank to go to college, first to get an Art Foundation and then to Manchester Polytechnic to join an innovative course called Design for Communications Media. I specialised in Educational Media Design, with the intention of applying what I was learning to cultural heritage. During my vacations and upon graduation I worked for the nascent company my friends had started, Past Pleasures, creating immersive living history festivals at Lancaster and Tunbridge Wells, as well as projects including: an exhibition for the centenary of the Commonwealth Institute; a design for a metafictional Sherlock Holmes exhibition in Croydon; and, a game that combined real-time investment advice from 300 year-old characters at the Bank of England Museum with a digital simulation, tracking the players\u2019 investment portfolio from the founding of the bank to its tercentenary. In 1996 I helped found JMD&amp;Co, and for two years I also lectured on Heritage Tourism and Visitor Management and Interpretation modules for a Portsmouth University validated HND\/degree course at Farnborough Technical College. Subsequently, I enrolled in the new Distance Learning delivered Masters\u2019 degree in Museum Studies at Leicester University, where I became interested in the social use of space, particularly Bill Hillier\u2019s \u201cspace syntax,\u201d and the increasing futility of cultural heritage sites trying to tell doggedly linear stories in three-dimensional spaces. Although my dissertation explored models for mapping interpretation, and particularly learning styles, onto spaces, a satisfactory reconciliation of linear story and three-dimensional space eluded me. After graduation, I decided my time in the \u201csmall business\u201d end of cultural heritage was over for a while, and I left JMD&amp;Co to join a cultural institution, the National Trust, as a Regional Community, Learning and Volunteering Manager. I brought the first National Trust iPad into use at Batemans, where, combined with a wax cylinder record player, and the help of renowned folk singer, Jon Boden, we\u2019ve returned Rudyard Kipling\u2019s voice back into his old home. However, one of the innovations which I am most proud of is the National Trust\u2019s virtual tours. Working with a small company, and a range of disabled stakeholders, we created a touch-screen based human computer interface that could also, if required, be controlled with other input devices, and allowed visitors with a variety of disabilities to fully enjoy the virtual tour.
