And of course I&#8217;m sucked into reading some part of the actual thesis, because something captures my attention. The thing that&#8217;s caught my eye this time comes from <a title=\"Personal website\" href=\"http:\/\/www.eyles.co.uk\/mark\/\">Mark Eyles<\/a>&#8216;, who I <a title=\"Ambient Games, Ambient Interpretation\" href=\"http:\/\/memetechnology.org\/2013\/03\/29\/ambient-games-ambient-interpretation\/\">wrote about<\/a> &#8230; (yikes!) just over two years ago, just before his thesis was released upon the world.<\/p>\n<p>In an effort to distinguish &#8220;ambient&#8221; from merely &#8220;pervasive&#8221; Eyles describes six &#8220;lenses&#8221; (from Schell, J. (2008). <a title=\"Amazon\" href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.co.uk\/The-Art-Game-Design-Edition\/dp\/1466598646\/ref=dp_ob_title_bk\">The Art of Game Design<\/a>) that help define what ambient means, in game terms.<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Persistent gameplay &#8211; Eyles cites MMORPGs, like <em>World of Warcraft<\/em>, as examples of games where things carry on happening even while you aren&#8217;t interacting with them.<\/li>\n<li>As an extension of the above,\u00a0 player initiated game actions occur away from the player\u2019s attention,\u00a0for example, in <em>Civilization<\/em>, there are agents at work within cites, producing food and researching technology, but the play has the option of leaving them to get on with it, or zooming down to city scale to direct the work themselves.<\/li>\n<li>Gameplay events occurring simultaneously at different locations within the game world &#8211; Eyles says: &#8220;In <em>The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim<\/em> there are many ambient background tasks occurring, hidden from the player; skills are increasing, experience points are being won and so on. However, although the world in <em>Skyrim<\/em> is large, complex and rich it is not functionally ambient, only aesthetically ambient. Events are only occurring in the immediate vicinity of the player, triggered by the player\u2019s presence and the missions the player has started.&#8221;<\/li>\n<li>Modelessness (that&#8217;s Mode-less-ness) &#8211; players have the option to ignore game mechanics. The example Eyles\u00a0gives is <em>Skyrim<\/em> again, wherein players don&#8217;t level-up automatically, they are told they that can level up, but can choose to ignore it until they are ready. He explains that this sort of philiosphy\u00a0makes a &#8220;range of levels of engagement&#8221; available to the player.<\/li>\n<li>Automation &#8211;\u00a0for example, in <em>Civilization<\/em> you can order an agent to, say, build roads and it will continue to build roads while you are concentrating on something else.<\/li>\n<li>Abstract representation &#8211; using another example from\u00a0<em>Civilization<\/em> Eyles describes how icons hide deeper levels of complexity &#8220;This method of using abstract representation of systems and events not only supports complexity but can also facilitate ambiguity, since players may incorrectly interpret symbols and their implications.&#8221;<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>He only talks about four of these when I\u00a0met him a couple of years ago, but as my own thoughts have developed away from simply locatative game mechanics and more towards a responsive environment, I only be come more convinced that these lenses (and maybe others like them) might also help me define exactly what I meant by &#8220;responsive environment.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>PS Maybe this little thought-journey has helped me with my literature review after all &#8211; I&#8217;m thinking about breaking it down thus (working titles for all these sections): Digital Storytelling; Interpretive Technologies; Narrative Structure; and, Personalisation. In my free time, I volunteered as a costumed interpreter at Kentwell Hall and, with re-enactment societies, at various medieval sites around the UK and France. When, one evening, a few of us said \u201cwe could make a business out of this\u201d I left my job at the bank to go to college, first to get an Art Foundation and then to Manchester Polytechnic to join an innovative course called Design for Communications Media. I specialised in Educational Media Design, with the intention of applying what I was learning to cultural heritage. During my vacations and upon graduation I worked for the nascent company my friends had started, Past Pleasures, creating immersive living history festivals at Lancaster and Tunbridge Wells, as well as projects including: an exhibition for the centenary of the Commonwealth Institute; a design for a metafictional Sherlock Holmes exhibition in Croydon; and, a game that combined real-time investment advice from 300 year-old characters at the Bank of England Museum with a digital simulation, tracking the players\u2019 investment portfolio from the founding of the bank to its tercentenary. In 1996 I helped found JMD&amp;Co, and for two years I also lectured on Heritage Tourism and Visitor Management and Interpretation modules for a Portsmouth University validated HND\\\/degree course at Farnborough Technical College. Subsequently, I enrolled in the new Distance Learning delivered Masters\u2019 degree in Museum Studies at Leicester University, where I became interested in the social use of space, particularly Bill Hillier\u2019s \u201cspace syntax,\u201d and the increasing futility of cultural heritage sites trying to tell doggedly linear stories in three-dimensional spaces. Although my dissertation explored models for mapping interpretation, and particularly learning styles, onto spaces, a satisfactory reconciliation of linear story and three-dimensional space eluded me. After graduation, I decided my time in the \u201csmall business\u201d end of cultural heritage was over for a while, and I left JMD&amp;Co to join a cultural institution, the National Trust, as a Regional Community, Learning and Volunteering Manager. I brought the first National Trust iPad into use at Batemans, where, combined with a wax cylinder record player, and the help of renowned folk singer, Jon Boden, we\u2019ve returned Rudyard Kipling\u2019s voice back into his old home. However, one of the innovations which I am most proud of is the National Trust\u2019s virtual tours. Working with a small company, and a range of disabled stakeholders, we created a touch-screen based human computer interface that could also, if required, be controlled with other input devices, and allowed visitors with a variety of disabilities to fully enjoy the virtual tour. Subsequently, I enrolled in the new Distance Learning delivered Masters\u2019 degree in Museum Studies at Leicester University, where I became interested in the social use of space, particularly Bill Hillier\u2019s \u201cspace syntax,\u201d and the increasing futility of cultural heritage sites trying to tell doggedly linear stories in three-dimensional spaces. Although my dissertation explored models for mapping interpretation, and particularly learning styles, onto spaces, a satisfactory reconciliation of linear story and three-dimensional space eluded me. After graduation, I decided my time in the \u201csmall business\u201d end of cultural heritage was over for a while, and I left JMD&amp;Co to join a cultural institution, the National Trust, as a Regional Community, Learning and Volunteering Manager. I brought the first National Trust iPad into use at Batemans, where, combined with a wax cylinder record player, and the help of renowned folk singer, Jon Boden, we\u2019ve returned Rudyard Kipling\u2019s voice back into his old home. However, one of the innovations which I am most proud of is the National Trust\u2019s virtual tours. Working with a small company, and a range of disabled stakeholders, we created a touch-screen based human computer interface that could also, if required, be controlled with other input devices, and allowed visitors with a variety of disabilities to fully enjoy the virtual tour.
