Teaching Anaphylaxis to Patients Toolkit

How does the Toolkit work?

All the topics covered throughout the course are listed below.

As healthcare professionals (HCP) we are frequently teaching and training patients and their families. However, as HCPs, sometimes we have had little training in how to teach and educate others. Several studies have shown that despite training, many HCPs and families do not fully understand anaphylaxis, when it should be treated or how to use an adrenaline auto-injector. It’s also often not a straightforward decision for the patient or their family to make. Some parents and children are frightened and anxious about using the adrenaline auto-injector and many do not always carry it with them.

How can you ensure that your teaching is effective and that your patients and their family learn all that you need them to? That’s where this Toolkit comes in, and it will explain everything you need to know! By the end of the course you will be able to deliver effective patient-focused education time and time again.

What will I be doing in the toolkit? How is it organised?

The Toolkit starts by meeting Noah our patient and his Mum, Joy. Throughout the Toolkit, you will explore how to teach the 3R’s of Anaphylaxis: Recognise, Rescue and Recover. After a refresher on anaphylaxis, you will explore how to develop a really effective teaching session for Noah and Joy.

In our Toolkit you will find:

  • activities that you can use in your own practice
  • a comprehensive resources section with references
  • links to useful websites
  • opportunities to further extend your learning
  • assessments to assess your knowledge against the EAACI competencies

You can work your way through all the course elements in your own time and stop and start the course whenever you wish. At the end, you will get a certificate of completion. There are three assessments. For each, you will receive feedback and your overall score. The assessments are all based on the EAACI competencies and are:

  1. Pre-course assessment: this helps you to gauge your knowledge before you start the Toolkit
  2. Post-course assessment: if you pass this assessment, you will receive a Certificate of Competence
  3. Annual assessment: you can choose whether you want to do this, and it can be part of your annual professional development activities to refresh your knowledge and competence in anaphylaxis.
