class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\">\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What we wanted to achieve<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>starting a conversation about hearing loss in our local community<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>connecting older community members to share their experience, knowledge and fears around hearing loss and brain ageing<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>raising awareness of hearing loss and the positive impact of prioritising hearing health on overall health and well-being<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>This project was funded by the Public Engagement with Research Unit (PERu) at the University of Southampton.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This project was lead by Kate Hough.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What we did<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Building connections and trust with local community groups<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Our approach to this objective was:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>reaching groups through existing networks<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>connecting with a diverse range of community groups<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>being open and friendly<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>getting involved with group activities, including quizzes, games, bingo and even singing<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Co-design activities with community group leads and PPIE group members<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Some of the activities we designed include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>information session and a quiz<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>arts and crafts to aid self-expression<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>designing a room around hearing impairment needs<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Running the activities in the community<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Clay modelling at the Let&#8217;s Communicate Hard of Hearing Club<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>the group made something representing their experience of deafness and brain health<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Interactive information workshop<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>members shared what they knew about hearing and brain health, what they would like to know and their personal experiences<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What went well<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>We built new partnerships with community groups.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We bridged the gap between the community and the University.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We raised awareness of hearing and brain health by sparking conversations with older members in our local community.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-buttons is-content-justification-center is-layout-flex wp-container-core-buttons-is-layout-a89b3969 wp-block-buttons-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-button has-custom-width wp-block-button__width-75\"><a class=\"wp-block-button__link wp-element-button\" href=\"https:\/\/generic.wordpress.soton.ac.uk\/all-ears\/working-with-the-community\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>Read more about our community engagement work and how it feeds into ALL_EARS@UoS<\/strong><\/a><\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>We produced two short videos with the Hard of Hearing Club and our PPIE group.
