Diabetes and hearing loss are big health challenges. They affect the lives of millions of people in England and many millions around the world. The evidence is that older people with diabetes are twice as likely to experience hearing loss.

We delved into the latest research findings and discussed the implications for living and ageing well.

We had inspiring talks from cutting-edge researchers in the field and the Royal National Institute for Deaf People (RNID). Members of the public had the chance to:

  • connect with others
  • engage in meaningful conversations
  • explore potential collaborations

We held an interactive session where we shared our insights on why understanding the connection between diabetes and hearing loss is crucial for individuals and their families.

This event was co-organised by ALL_EARS@UoS and the Centre for Research on Ageing. It was registered with the World Health Organization (WHO) as part of an international series of activities for World Hearing Day 2024, themed ‘Changing Mindsets’.

The above recording includes:

  • Dr Dalia Tsimpida talking about data pitfalls and informed solutions for people with diabetes and undetected hearing loss
  • Professor Tracey Newman highlighting the biological links between hearing loss and diabetes
  • Dr Kate Hough leading a discussion session around four key areas to consider when thinking about projects linking hearing loss and diabetes
