Map of Central Winchester

The Guildhall is marked on this map near to the tourist information office. It is on the Broadway at the bottom right of the picture. It is near the Abbey Gardens and the statue of King Alfred.

There are direct trains from London and the train station is within 15 minutes walk (downhill) of the Guildhall. Head down into the main town and aim for the old centre by turning right onto Jewry St. Jewry St. has various restaurants and half-timbered buildings. You will then come to the pedestrianised area of the High Street (on your left and downhill). Keeping going through the shopping area and eventually, the High Street will become the Broadway. If you can see either a bus station or a large statue of King Alfred then you are nearly there. Look for a large Victorian building on the right.

The Guildhall is opposite the bus station and the National Express coaches also stop nearby opposite King Alfred’s statue. Winchester Cathedral is very close to the Guildhall and it is easy to see for miles around.

If you are travelling by plane, then Southampton Airport is the most conveniently located. Southampton Airport Parkway train station is immediately outside the terminal. The train will take you to Winchester station in under 10 minutes.

If you fly into other airports (e.g. Heathrow and Gatwick) then it can be quite difficult to travel west. There are National Express coaches which go door to door. They will take a while and you may have to wait in the airport for a long time before they turn up. Train connections are not direct. It is sometimes just as easy to go into London and back out again. If you wish to avoid public transport, try English Rose airport transfers.

If travelling by car, you might be best off using the city’s Park and Ride options. Winchester is an old city and was not designed for car parking. It has a slightly complicated one-way system.

Park and Ride advice

If you are travelling on the M3, then South Winchester P and R has the most parking spaces. St Catherine’s is closer but you might not get a space. South W is still only a short bus ride away.
