‘Wellington Portrayed' - a lecture by the 9th Duke of Wellington

Wednesday 28 October 2015 | 6.30pm, teas & coffees will be served from 6.00pm

Established in 1989 with an endowment from the Spanish Ambassador, the annual Wellington Lecture explores aspects of the life and times of the 1st Duke of Wellington, one of the leading military and political figures of the 19th century.

Over the years the University of Southampton has welcomed a host of distinguished speakers to present the lecture. This year we welcome Charles Wellesley, the 9th Duke of Wellington, who has spent his whole life surrounded by images of the 1st Duke of Wellington, at Apsley House in London and Stratfield Saye House in Hampshire. Last year, he published an updated and extended version of the 1935 iconography of the 1st Duke, which incorporated many new images and new information that have since come to light.

The 1st Duke of Wellington was probably the most painted and sculpted individual in British History: The National Portrait Gallery alone holds 339 images of Wellington versus 84 for Nelson, 85 for Marlborough, 90 for Henry VIII and 125 for Elizabeth I.

The 9th Duke will talk about the 1st Duke’s attitude to sitting for his portrait, and about the painters, sculptors and caricaturists who captured the distinctive face and features which became so widely known.

If you would like to register for this event please RSVP by Friday 23 October.
