Prof Pia Riggirozzi and Dr Natalia Cintra of the University of Southampton have recently participated as keynote speakers at the Fall symposium ‘Her Journey, Her Story, Her Rights: The Impact of Gender on Forced Migration’ at Fordham University New York, USA, Graduate School of Social Service. The event was organised by the Directors of Her Migrant Hub and took place on 10th November 2023. The symposium brought together discussants, using a multi-stakeholder approach to address the global and local implications of gendered migration processes, and center the voice of women with lived experiences of forced migration in developing recommendations for addressing challenges and advocating for improved migration policies.

As part of the activities organised by the host organisation, Pia and Natalia had also the opportunity to meet with Fordham students and faculty members; women activists, asylum seekers in NYC, and give a talk at the UN-NGO Committee on Forced Migration Monthly Meeting.

On her return from the USA, Prof Pia Riggorozzi, said: ‘What a fantastic event. Powerful & stimulating. We discussed conditions for protection of migrant women at city, state and international levels of governance. Shocking to hear same stories of dispossession affecting migrant women in Roraima (Brazil), Darien (Panamá) & New York’.

It is a huge pleasure to  invite you to our end of project conference on 26th and 27th June 2023 at the University of Southampton, UK.

In the conference we will present findings and outputs of the project Redressing Gendered Health Inequalities of Displaced Women and Girls in Contexts of Protracted Crisis in Central and South America (ReGHID). ReGHID is an ESRC funded interdisciplinary project that looks at health needs and rights of women and girls in displacement in South-South migration as well as the barriers/gaps of protection that affect them.

The conference is a day and a half, and we will have three themes structuring panels and keynotes: migration, gender and vulnerabilities; methodologies of research about and with populations in displacement; and migration, gender and responsibility for protection. The agenda is here.

We are also screening a 26-minute documentary Salir Adelante/Moving Forward. Salir Adelante is a documentary based on the stories of Venezuelan forced migrant women and girls who fled humanitarian crisis to rebuild their lives and hopes while experiencing the everyday struggles of unfamiliar and sometimes adverse places in Brazil. The documentary calls the attention to the perilous journeys to hope, safety and wellbeing they undertook as well as the failures of protection regimes and policies to redress the many risks, harms and barriers that stop migrant women and girls from enjoying the rights, dignity, and respect they are entitled to. The documentary screening will be followed by a Q&A session and debate.

We really hope you can join us!

Information about the film and the trailer at:  https://filmfreeway.com/saliradelantedoc

Venue: the event will take place at  Building 100 – Room 4013, Highfield Campus, Southampton, UK.

You can book your place here: Eventbrite link .

Best wishes,

Pía Riggirozzi (and the ReGHID team)
